Imagination, this unrestrained queen of vision and fantasy, so little time we have for it in our adulthood, has stopped again after two years in Slovak Radio.

Dear friends, welcome to the PRIX EX AEQUO 2002.

The fourth international Festival of Radio Plays for Children and Youth confirms the indisputable fact that in spite of the present day’s attack of many other media on this target group, the production for the youngest listeners is an essential priority of public service broadcasters world-wide. It is a natural result of fundamental and invariable mission of the radio sharing the responsibility for the most harmonious development of the youngest generation.

The importance of the message which authors and producing teams are endeavouring to pass to them is even more significant, because those message recipients are listeners untouched by filthiness of everyday struggle of adults for their place under the sun.

But at the same time, the responsibility of creators and producers of individual piece of art increases. Because they influence the development and value-attitudes of those whom their production is intended.

Paradoxically, it is the radio (acoustic) treatment of this artistic expression, whitout the opportunity of taking advantage of an instant and immediate visual perception, which opens broader possibilities for all elements of children’s fantasy and imagination activation. Also in the beginning of the new millennium, radio producers - that is also you - offer to their listeners the huge space destined for the cultivation of individual creativity through sounds and words evoking intensive inner projections, easy getting over the time and space limits and another trifles bordering our everyday adult ritual.

Similarly as in preceding years, the 2002 PRIX EX AEQUO Festival is not only about concentrated listening of works created by colleagues. There is also the space for personal meetings, disputations, discussions, drifts, talks about new trends in the form, content and creation. And at last but not at least – the Festival is also about new friendships.

PRIX EX AEQUO 2002 has the ambition to be better and more successful than antecedent festivals. I hope that listener’s response to the presented works will confirm it in the near future.
